What Is Hydrogen Peroxide?

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is an inorganic peroxide compound — a clear, colourless liquid that is a strong oxidising agent. It decomposes to water and oxygen (2H₂O₂ → 2H₂O + O₂), making it an environmentally attractive oxidant with no persistent halogenated by-products. In water treatment, H₂O₂ is used as an oxidising biocide, for cyanide destruction (detox) in gold mining tailings water, for sulphide oxidation, and as a bleaching agent. In paper and textile manufacturing, it is the primary bleaching agent. It is supplied in aqueous solution at various concentrations from 3% (pharmacy) through 35% and 50% (industrial) to 70% (highly reactive, specialist applications).

Water Treatment and Biocide Applications

In water treatment, hydrogen peroxide is used as a biocide for bacterial control in potable water systems, cooling water (often as an adjunct to other treatments), and in CIP systems for food and beverage equipment. At sufficient concentration and contact time, H₂O₂ inactivates a broad range of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and spores. In oilfield produced water treatment, H₂O₂ is used to oxidise hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and control sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB). In cyanide wastewater treatment (gold mine tailings), H₂O₂ in the presence of copper catalyst (SO₂/air or peroxide process) oxidises free cyanide to cyanate, achieving cyanide detoxification.

Industrial Bleaching and Chemical Applications

In pulp and paper manufacturing, hydrogen peroxide (35–50%) is the primary chemical for pulp brightening (elemental chlorine-free and totally chlorine-free bleaching sequences). In textile processing, it bleaches natural fibres (cotton, wool, linen) without damaging fibre strength. In the electronics industry, it is used in etchant formulations. As a chemical oxidant, it is used in synthesis of epoxides, peracids, and other fine chemicals. Terracore Chemicals supplies industrial-grade hydrogen peroxide at 35%, 50%, and 60% concentrations for water treatment and industrial applications in Southern Africa.
