What Is Triacetin?

Triacetin (glyceryl triacetate) is the triester of glycerol and acetic acid, produced by acetylation of glycerol with acetic anhydride or acetic acid. It is a low-toxicity, biodegradable, food-approved solvent and plasticiser with E1518 status. In animal nutrition it serves as a carrier for fat-soluble vitamins, flavours, and pigments; an energy substrate hydrolysed to acetate and glycerol; and a plasticiser that improves the flexibility of compressed pellets.

Acetate Supply and Energy Metabolism

Hydrolysis of triacetin in the gastrointestinal tract releases three moles of acetic acid (acetate) per mole of triacetin. Acetate is the principal VFA in ruminant metabolism and the primary substrate for milk fat synthesis in dairy cows. Supplemental triacetin is therefore of particular value in high-grain dairy diets where ruminal acetate production is reduced at the expense of propionate and butyrate.

Carrier and Formulation Uses

Triacetin dissolves vitamin E, carotenoids, and essential oils more effectively than propylene glycol at equivalent concentrations, and its pleasant flavour-neutral profile avoids masking the palatability of supplemented feeds.
