Acrylic Acid as a Monomer and Platform Chemical
Acrylic acid is the foundational monomer for the polyacrylate family of polymers. Its largest use is in superabsorbent polymers (SAP) for baby diapers and feminine hygiene products. It also polymerises to form polyacrylic acid (PAA) used as a scale inhibitor and detergent builder, and it is esterified with alcohols to produce acrylate esters — butyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate — used in emulsion paints and pressure-sensitive adhesives.
Storage and Supply
Acrylic acid polymerises readily and is supplied with a polymerisation inhibitor (MEHQ). It must be stored at cool temperatures (≤25 °C) away from light and heat. Terracore supplies in inhibited grade in stainless steel or polyethylene drums. Full COA (assay, inhibitor content, water) and SDS are provided.
Applications
- Superabsorbent polymer (SAP) for nappies/hygiene
- Polyacrylic acid and polyacrylate dispersions
- Acrylic ester monomer synthesis
- Water-treatment flocculants
- Adhesive and sealant formulations
- Detergent co-builder
