What is Tartaric Acid?
L-(+)-Tartaric acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic hydroxy acid found in grapes and other fruits, and is a by-product of wine production. It is one of the main natural acids in wine and contributes characteristic tartness. Feed-grade tartaric acid is a white crystalline powder with high solubility in water and a pleasant clean sour taste. It is approved as a food and feed additive globally and provides mild acidification and flavouring activity.
Role in Animal Nutrition
Tartaric acid is used in animal nutrition primarily as a flavouring and acidifying agent in pet food and specialty feeds. Its pleasant tartness at low inclusion levels improves palatability and masking of undesirable flavours in companion animal formulations. As a dicarboxylic acid, it functions as an antioxidant synergist by chelating pro-oxidant metal ions that catalyse lipid oxidation. Tartaric acid also has antifungal properties at low pH, contributing to mild preservation activity in acidified feed products. Its natural wine by-product origin gives it a natural-label positioning valued in premium pet nutrition formulations.
