What Is EDTA?
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is the most widely used chelating agent in chemistry and industry. Its molecular structure contains four carboxylate groups and two nitrogen donor atoms, arranged so that it can simultaneously coordinate to six bonding positions on a central metal ion (hexadentate chelation). This multi-site coordination produces exceptionally stable metal chelate complexes with divalent ions (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Fe²⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, Pb²⁺) and trivalent ions (Fe³⁺, Al³⁺, Cr³⁺). The resulting chelates are highly stable, water-soluble, and effectively remove metal ions from solution or prevent their precipitation, interference, or catalytic activity.
Industrial and Water Treatment Applications
In boiler and steam system water treatment, EDTA is used to chelate calcium and magnesium hardness (sequestration of scale-forming ions) and to dissolve existing calcium carbonate scale from boiler surfaces (descaling). In cooling water treatment, it chelates calcium and iron ions. In industrial cleaning and CIP (clean-in-place) systems, EDTA is used as a descaling and metal-sequestering component of cleaning formulations for heat exchangers, dairy equipment, and food processing plants. In textile dyeing, it sequesters calcium and iron from process water to prevent dye precipitation and staining.
Pharmaceutical and Laboratory Applications
In pharmaceutical formulations, EDTA (typically as disodium EDTA) is used as a preservative and chelating agent — it sequesters metal ions that catalyse oxidative degradation of drug molecules and disrupts bacterial cell membrane stability. In analytical chemistry, EDTA is the standard titrimetric chelating agent for total hardness determination and metal ion quantification (complexometric titration). In food, Na₂EDTA is approved as a preservative and sequestrant. Terracore Chemicals supplies EDTA as the free acid, disodium salt, and tetrasodium salt in technical and pharmaceutical grades.
