What Is Pharmaceutical-Grade Talc?

Talc is a naturally occurring hydrous magnesium phyllosilicate mineral with the formula Mg₃Si₄O₁₀(OH)₂. It is the softest mineral known (Mohs hardness 1) and has a characteristic greasy, soapy feel. Pharmaceutical-grade talc is produced from selected, asbestos-free talc deposits and is processed to eliminate impurities, including any trace fibrous minerals, producing a pure, fine white to light grey powder. Pharmaceutical and cosmetic grades must comply with pharmacopoeia specifications (BP, USP, Ph.Eur.) ensuring freedom from asbestiform fibres and specified microbiological purity.

Pharmaceutical Tablet Glidant and Lubricant

In pharmaceutical tablet manufacturing, talc is used as a glidant (improving powder flowability through hoppers and feeders) and as a lubricant (reducing friction between tablet granules and die surfaces during compression). It is commonly used in combination with magnesium stearate — talc provides primarily glidant action and is less hydrophobic than magnesium stearate, producing less impact on tablet disintegration when used at appropriate levels. Talc is also used as a non-active filler diluent in tablet formulations and as a mould-release dusting agent in soft gel (softgel) capsule manufacturing.

Cosmetic Applications

In face powders, blush, eyeshadow, and setting powders, talc is the primary base filler — contributing coverage, smooth skin feel, oil absorption, and bulk to powder cosmetic formulations. Its unique combination of slip, coverage, and soft focus effect makes it irreplaceable in compact and loose powder cosmetics. In body powder and baby powder, talc acts as an absorbent that reduces moisture and chafing on the skin surface. Terracore Chemicals supplies pharmaceutical-grade, asbestos-free talc in compliant specification for cosmetic and pharmaceutical manufacturers.
