What Is Glyceryl Triacetin?

Glyceryl triacetin, commonly called triacetin, is the triester of glycerol and acetic acid. It is a colourless, slightly oily liquid with a mild, characteristic odour. In the digestive tract it is hydrolysed to glycerol and acetic acid (acetate), both of which are valuable energy substrates. This makes triacetin an efficient, bioavailable source of acetate without the corrosive properties of acetic acid itself.

Ruminant and Gut Health Applications

Acetate is the predominant volatile fatty acid (VFA) produced in ruminant fermentation and accounts for approximately 70% of ruminal VFA in cattle on forage-based diets. Triacetin supplementation supports rumen buffering, acetate supply for milk fat synthesis, and epithelial maintenance of the rumen wall. In monogastric species the acetic acid released assists gut acidification and inhibition of enteric pathogens.

Solvent and Carrier Applications

As an approved food-additive solvent (E1518 in the EU), triacetin is widely used to dissolve and carry fat-soluble vitamins, flavours, and pigments in liquid premixes and supplements. Its low toxicity, good solubilising capacity, and biodegradability make it preferable to many synthetic solvents. Terracore Chemicals supplies USP- and food-grade triacetin in drums and IBCs.

Applications

  • Rumen acetate and energy supplementation
  • Gut acidification in monogastric feeds
  • Fat-soluble vitamin carrier in liquid supplements
  • Flavour and pigment solvent in premixes
  • Palatability enhancer in compound feeds
  • Anti-caking agent in powdered feed blends
