What is Feed Grade Iodine?

Iodine is an essential trace mineral required for synthesis of thyroid hormones (thyroxine T4 and triiodothyronine T3) which regulate metabolic rate, growth, reproduction, and immune function in all animals. Feed-grade iodine is supplied as the more stable Potassium Iodate (KIO₃) or as Ethylenediamine Dihydroiodide (EDDI), an organic iodine source used in cattle for iodine supplementation, including in top-dress applications. Potassium Iodide (KI) is more sensitive to oxidation but also available.

Role in Animal Nutrition

Iodine deficiency causes goitre, reproductive failure, stillbirths, and reduced viability in all livestock species. In dairy cows, adequate iodine supplementation supports milk iodine content, which has human health significance given the importance of dairy as a dietary iodine source for people. In poultry, iodine supports thyroid function and egg production. In sheep, iodine deficiency on goitrogenic forages (brassicas, kale, clovers) is a recognised production risk. As iodine requirements are very low (0.3–0.5 mg/kg diet), feed-grade sources are included in trace mineral premixes at very precise levels.
