What Is DTPMP?

DTPMP (diethylene triamine pentamethylene phosphonic acid, also DTPMPA) is a high-molecular-weight organophosphonate with five phosphonic acid groups, providing strong scale inhibition and iron stabilisation performance that exceeds that of lower-phosphonate-count inhibitors (HEDP, ATMP) in high-hardness, high-pH, and high-temperature water conditions. Its five phosphonate coordination sites give DTPMP exceptional affinity for calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese ions, making it effective for scale types that are difficult to control with simpler phosphonates, particularly barium sulfate (BaSO₄) and strontium sulfate scale common in oilfield produced water systems.

Scale Inhibition and Iron Stabilisation

In cooling water systems operating at elevated concentrations (high cycles of concentration), DTPMP controls calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, and calcium phosphate scale at dosages of 2–5 mg/L. Its superior performance at high pH (8.5–9.5) and high temperature (up to 70–80°C) makes it the preferred phosphonate for high-performance cooling water programmes. In industrial boiler systems, DTPMP is used to stabilise dissolved iron (preventing iron oxide and iron phosphate deposits) and control calcium scale. Iron stabilisation — preventing iron from precipitating as iron oxide or hydroxide deposits that cause reddish fouling in systems — is an important secondary function of DTPMP, especially in systems with iron-bearing make-up water.

Oilfield and Membrane Applications

In oilfield injection water and produced water systems, DTPMP is used to prevent barium and strontium sulfate scale — among the most intractable scale types, requiring strong phosphonate coordination for inhibition. In reverse osmosis (RO) membrane systems, DTPMP is an ingredient in antiscalant formulations for systems operating with high-sulfate, high-calcium, or high-barium feed waters. Terracore Chemicals supplies DTPMP as approximately 50% aqueous solution for water treatment applications across Southern Africa.
