What Is LABSA 96%?

Linear alkylbenzene sulphonic acid (LABSA), supplied at 96% active content, is the principal intermediate in the manufacture of the world’s most widely used anionic surfactant — linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS). It is produced by sulphonation of linear alkylbenzene (LAB) with sulphur trioxide gas. LABSA is neutralised with caustic soda, caustic potash, or an amine such as TEA to produce the corresponding sulphonate salt for inclusion in finished products.

Role in Cleaning Product Manufacture

In n cleaning product manufacturing, LABSA is typically neutralised on-site and incorporated directly into the formulation process, avoiding the need to purchase pre-neutralised LAS flakes. This in-situ neutralisation approach gives formulators control over the salt form, counterion, pH, and final active concentration, while reducing raw material cost per kilogram of active surfactant compared to buying pre-neutralised product.
