What Is Barium Titanate?

Barium titanate (BaTiO₃) is a white ceramic powder with a perovskite crystal structure and exceptional ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and pyroelectric properties. It undergoes phase transitions between tetragonal and cubic structures at the Curie point (~130°C), causing dramatic changes in its dielectric constant. These unique properties make barium titanate one of the most technologically important electroceramics in modern electronics.

Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs)

The primary application of barium titanate is as the dielectric material in multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), which are essential components in virtually all electronic devices — from smartphones and laptops to automotive control units and industrial equipment. Its extremely high dielectric constant (up to 10,000 at the Curie point) allows miniaturised capacitors to store large amounts of electrical energy, driving the miniaturisation of electronic circuits.

Piezoelectric Transducers & Sensors

In its poled (ferroelectric) form, barium titanate exhibits a significant piezoelectric response, generating electrical charge when mechanically stressed and vice versa. This property is exploited in ultrasonic transducers, acoustic sensors, sonar systems, accelerometers, and medical imaging equipment. Piezoelectric barium titanate ceramics were the first practical piezoelectric ceramics and established the foundation for modern smart material devices.

Electro-Optic & Thermistor Applications

Barium titanate-based ceramics are used in positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistors, which exhibit a sharp rise in electrical resistance above the Curie temperature. PTC devices are used in self-regulating heaters, motor overload protection, and resettable fuses. In electro-optic applications, barium titanate crystals are used in optical waveguides, holographic storage, and non-linear optical devices due to their large electro-optic coefficients.

Applications

  • Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs)
  • Piezoelectric transducers and sensors
  • PTC thermistors
  • Ultrasonic sonar equipment
  • Electro-optic waveguides
  • Holographic storage
  • Medical ultrasound imaging
