What Is Sodium Etasulfate?

Sodium etasulfate (sodium ethyl sulfate) is a short-chain alkyl sulfate anionic surfactant, produced by sulphation of ethanol and neutralisation with sodium hydroxide. Its two-carbon chain makes it the shortest commercially relevant alkyl sulfate, with fundamentally different surface-active behaviour from longer-chain homologues such as SLS or SLES. It is completely water-miscible and exhibits low, easily controlled foam levels.

Performance in Low-Foam Applications

The low foaming character of sodium etasulfate makes it valuable in applications where foam is undesirable: machine dishwashers, continuous cleaning-in-place (CIP) circuits in food and beverage plants, and tunnel washing machines in industrial laundry. It provides effective wetting and soil penetration without generating the foam that can disrupt rinse cycles, overflow machine sumps, or impede turbulence-driven mechanical cleaning action.

Formulation and Supply

Sodium etasulfate is compatible with a wide range of builders, alkalis, and non-foaming co-surfactants. Terracore Chemicals supplies it as an aqueous solution in drums and IBCs for industrial cleaning product formulators and food processing plant chemical suppliers in South Africa.

Applications

  • Machine dishwash detergent formulation
  • CIP cleaning circuit surfactant
  • Industrial tunnel washer active
  • Food plant equipment cleaning concentrate
  • Low-foam floor scrubber solution
  • Textile finishing and processing auxiliary
