THT as a Gas Odorant
Tetrahydrothiophene is the primary odorant added to natural gas and LPG distribution networks in many countries, including South Africa, to enable detection of otherwise odourless gas leaks. Even at concentrations of a few parts per million it produces a distinctive sulfurous odour detectable by the human nose, providing an effective safety warning. Its chemical stability and low reactivity make it ideal for long-term retention in gas pipelines.
Supply and Handling
Terracore supplies THT in small quantities for laboratory and calibration applications, and in bulk for gas-network odorant dosing systems. All shipments include COA confirming purity and water content, and full TDG and SDS documentation.
Applications
- Natural gas odorant (primary application)
- Pharmaceutical and lab synthesis reagent
- Organic sulfur chemistry intermediate
- Solvent in specialty processes
- Detection threshold testing
- Electronic-grade cleaning
