What Is HPMC?
Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC, hypromellose) is a semi-synthetic cellulose ether produced by alkylation of cellulose with methyl chloride and propylene oxide. It is a water-soluble polymer that forms clear, viscous aqueous solutions and exhibits a unique property: thermoreversible gelation — HPMC solutions are fluid at low temperatures and gel on heating, returning to liquid on cooling. Different HPMC grades vary in degree of methylation, hydroxypropyl substitution, and molecular weight, resulting in a range of viscosity grades (from low-viscosity E grades to ultra-high-viscosity K grades) and surface activity profiles for different applications.
Cosmetic and Personal Care Applications
In cosmetics, HPMC is used as a viscosity modifier, film-former, and suspending agent in a wide range of products. In shampoos and hair care, it provides viscosity, foam stability, and conditioning film formation. In skin care, it thickens serums and gels and acts as a film-former in peel-off masks and eyebrow/eyelash formulations. In colour cosmetics, it provides suspension stability for pigments and acts as a binder in powder compacts. Low-viscosity HPMC grades are used in ophthalmic solutions and contact lens wetting solutions as a viscosity enhancer and lubricant.
Pharmaceutical and Construction Uses
In oral pharmaceutical manufacturing, HPMC is one of the most important excipients — used as a binder and film coating agent in tablet manufacturing (in the Opadry and similar coating systems), and as the matrix polymer in hydrophilic matrix sustained-release tablet systems (K grades) where it controls drug release rate. In construction, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is used in tile adhesives, renders, and mortars as a water-retention agent and workability modifier. Terracore Chemicals supplies HPMC in multiple viscosity grades for cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and construction applications.
