What Is Sodium Nitrate?

Sodium Nitrate (NaNO₃) is a naturally occurring mineral fertilizer (historically known as Chilean saltpetre) that supplies 16% nitrogen in the nitrate form and 26% sodium. It is one of the few inorganic nitrogen fertilizers accepted in certified organic production where the naturally mined grade is used. The nitrate nitrogen in sodium nitrate is immediately available to plants, making it suitable for foliar feeding and rapid correction of nitrogen deficiency in growing crops.

Sodium Nitrate in Crop Programs

Sodium Nitrate is used in speciality fertilizer programs where nitrate nitrogen is preferred over ammonium forms, and where a small sodium contribution is acceptable or desirable (some sugar beet and table beet varieties respond positively to sodium). It is also used in combination with potassium nitrate, MAP, and MKP in compound water-soluble formulations. For crops where chloride must be excluded, sodium nitrate provides a sodium source without adding chloride.
