What is Calcium Propionate?

Calcium propionate is the calcium salt of propionic acid and a widely approved feed and food preservative used specifically for its antifungal activity. In aqueous environments and within the gastrointestinal tract, calcium propionate releases biologically active propionic acid, which penetrates fungal cells and inhibits enzyme systems essential for sporulation and hyphal growth. As the calcium salt, it offers the additional advantage of contributing calcium to the diet alongside its preservative function.

Role in Animal Nutrition

Calcium propionate is one of the most commonly used mould inhibitors in compound feeds, grain storage, and total mixed rations for dairy cattle. In TMR systems, mould growth and aerobic deterioration are major practical problems that reduce palatability, dry matter intake, and milk production. Calcium propionate treatment of TMR, high-moisture corn, and fermented feeds prevents aerobic spoilage. In compound feed, it is included at 1,000–3,000 ppm to prevent mould growth during storage, particularly in humid climates like South Africa where aflatoxin risk is high.
