What Is Phosphoric Acid?

Phosphoric Acid (H₃PO₄) is a mineral acid produced from phosphate rock and is the primary industrial source of phosphorus for fertilizer manufacturing. Fertilizer-grade phosphoric acid (also called wet-process acid) is supplied at concentrations of 75–85% P₂O₅ equivalent and is used to manufacture MAP, DAP, and MKP, as well as in liquid fertilizer production. It is a clear to slightly yellow corrosive liquid handled in IBC containers, drums, and tanker deliveries.

Phosphoric Acid in Fertigation

In fertigation systems, dilute phosphoric acid is used to lower the pH of alkaline irrigation water, which prevents calcium and magnesium precipitation and keeps phosphate ions soluble in the solution. A small injection of phosphoric acid into the irrigation line before nutrient dosing can significantly improve phosphate uptake efficiency, particularly in drip systems where emitter clogging from calcium phosphate deposits is a concern. It is also used to flush irrigation lines and tanks to remove mineral scale.
