What is Glycine?
Glycine is the simplest amino acid and is classified as non-essential, though it becomes conditionally essential in high-growth-rate animals such as broiler chickens. It is the primary amino acid in collagen and plays important roles in detoxification, creatine synthesis, and one-carbon metabolism. Feed-grade glycine is a freely soluble white powder widely used across poultry, companion animal, and aquaculture nutrition.
Role in Animal Nutrition
In fast-growing broilers, glycine and serine together are often first limiting in low-protein diets because of the high demand for collagen in feathers, connective tissue, and skin. Dietary glycine supplementation supports growth performance, feather development, and uric acid metabolism in birds. In pet food, glycine is used to improve palatability and support joint health and skin coat quality in premium formulations.
