What Is Phosphorus Pentasulfide?

Phosphorus pentasulfide (P₂S₅, or more accurately P₄S₁₀ in its molecular form) is an inorganic phosphorus-sulfur compound that appears as a light yellow crystalline solid. It is highly reactive toward water, reacting exothermically to produce phosphoric acid derivatives and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas, and must be stored dry and handled with care. In industrial chemistry, phosphorus pentasulfide is the key starting material for the manufacture of phosphorodithioate and dithiophosphoric acid derivatives — the chemical precursors to all dithiophosphate (DTP) flotation collectors and to zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) lubricant additives.

Role in DTP Collector Synthesis

Dithiophosphate collectors (aerofloat-type and DTP series) are made by reacting phosphorus pentasulfide with alcohols (isopropanol, isobutanol, amyl alcohol) to form the corresponding dialkyldithiophosphoric acids, which are then neutralised with sodium or ammonium hydroxide to produce sodium or ammonium dithiophosphate salts. This reaction — alcoholysis of P₂S₅ — is the industrial synthesis route for all DTP series collectors. Phosphorus pentasulfide is therefore an upstream specialty chemical for mining reagent manufacturers. It also appears in the synthesis of certain thiophosphate esters used as secondary collectors and frothers in mineral processing.
