HPMA in Functional Coatings and Biomedical Applications

Hydroxypropyl methacrylate is a hydroxyl-functional acrylic monomer widely incorporated into resins for two-component polyurethane and melamine-crosslinked coating systems. The pendant hydroxyl group reacts with isocyanate or melamine crosslinkers during cure, building chemical and mechanical resistance into the coating film. HPMA is also used in dental composite resins and hydrogel contact lenses, where its biocompatibility and hydrophilicity are important.

Supply and Cold-Chain Requirements

HPMA is inhibited and requires cool storage (8–20 °C) to prevent premature polymerisation. Terracore supplies in 25 kg and 200 kg drums under nitrogen atmosphere. COA reports HPMA assay (GC), hydroxyl value, acid value, and inhibitor content. SDS with polymerisation hazard information is provided.

Applications

  • Acrylic resin for automotive OEM coatings
  • UV-curable coating and ink formulations
  • Dental composite resin monomer
  • Crosslinkable contact lens hydrogel
  • Adhesion promoter and wetting agent
  • Water-borne coating hydroxyl source
