What is Propyl Gallate?

Propyl gallate is the n-propyl ester of gallic acid and one of a family of gallate antioxidants used in food and feed preservation. It functions as a free-radical scavenger and metal chelator, providing effective protection of unsaturated fatty acids against peroxidation. In animal fat preservation, propyl gallate is typically used in combination with BHA and/or BHT and a chelating agent (citric acid or EDTA), as this combination provides superior antioxidant protection to any single compound alone.

Role in Animal Nutrition

Oxidative rancidity in animal fat ingredients is a critical quality and nutritional concern in compound feed and pet food manufacturing. Propyl gallate, in combination with BHA and BHT, is a classic and widely approved antioxidant system for fat protection.
