What Is Benzoyl Hydroximic Acid?

Benzoyl hydroximic acid (BHA, benzhydroxamic acid) is the simplest aromatic hydroxamic acid, consisting of a phenyl (benzene) ring directly attached to the hydroxamic acid functional group (C(=O)NHOH). It is a well-studied model collector in the hydroxamic acid series, widely used in research applications due to its high purity and defined molecular structure, and increasingly employed as a production-scale collector for oxide mineral flotation where its selectivity profile offers advantages over alkyl (fatty acid type) hydroxamic acids.

Selectivity and Performance

BHA is particularly selective for cassiterite (SnO₂), wolframite ((Fe,Mn)WO₄), and rare earth oxide minerals, forming highly stable five-membered ring chelate complexes at their metal-enriched surfaces while showing minimal adsorption on quartz and most silicate gangue minerals. In tin and tungsten flotation, BHA delivers both good recovery of the target oxide mineral and excellent rejection of gangue, reducing concentrate cleaning requirements. Its high purity makes it suitable for research applications where collector purity is required for mechanistic studies.

Supply Details

Terracore Chemicals supplies benzoyl hydroximic acid in 25 kg bags at technical and research grades. We advise on optimal conditioning protocols (temperature, pH, ethanol/water co-solvent for dissolution) and on comparative selectivity with salicyl and alkyl hydroximic acid collectors for specific oxide mineral assemblages.

Applications

  • Cassiterite (tin oxide) selective flotation
  • Wolframite and ferberite (tungsten) flotation
  • Rare earth mineral flotation — REE oxides and carbonates
  • Research-grade oxide mineral flotation studies
  • Benchmarking collector series against alkyl and salicyl hydroxamic acids
  • Selective separation of oxide minerals from silicate gangue
