What Is Lauryl Glucoside?

Lauryl glucoside (dodecyl glucoside) is an alkyl polyglucoside (APG) surfactant produced by the condensation of glucose (derived from starch) and lauryl alcohol (C12, derived from palm kernel or coconut oil). It is a mild, non-ionic surfactant that provides gentle cleansing with a low irritation profile, making it one of the most suitable surfactants for sensitive skin, children’s skin care, and baby care formulations. APG surfactants like lauryl glucoside are derived from renewable plant-based sources and are readily biodegradable, making them preferred for “natural”, “clean beauty”, and eco-certified cosmetic formulations.

Mild Cleansing and Formulation Benefits

Lauryl glucoside is mild to skin and eyes — it has a significantly lower irritation potential than conventional anionic surfactants (SLS, SLES) as measured in standard in vitro and in vivo skin and eye irritation assays. This mildness is attributable to its non-ionic character and the protective properties of the glucoside head group. In cleansing formulations, it provides moderate foaming and good cleansing efficiency, particularly when combined with co-surfactants such as cocamidopropyl betaine or decyl glucoside. Lauryl glucoside improves the mildness of formulations containing more irritating anionic surfactants when used in combination, allowing the overall formulation irritation profile to be significantly reduced.

Natural and Sustainable Formulation

The plant-based origin of lauryl glucoside (glucose from starch, fatty alcohol from palm kernel or coconut) and its ready biodegradability make it compliant with natural cosmetics standards including COSMOS and ECOCERT certification programmes. It is used in organic and natural certified shampoos, body washes, baby products, and facial cleansers targeting natural and clean beauty consumers. Terracore Chemicals supplies lauryl glucoside as an aqueous solution in cosmetic grade for personal care manufacturers.
