ADC as a Chemical Blowing Agent
Azodicarbonamide is the most widely used organic chemical blowing agent. On heating above its decomposition temperature, it liberates nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and ammonia gases within the polymer matrix, producing a fine, uniform cellular foam structure. For PVC and rubber applications it is commonly activated with zinc oxide, zinc stearate, or urea to reduce the activation temperature to 150–165 °C, enabling foam expansion in standard processing windows. ADC is used extensively in PVC foam sheet for wallcoverings, synthetic leather, and foam-backed flooring.
Packaging and Regulatory Note
Terracore supplies ADC in 25 kg multi-wall paper bags. The product is classified as a self-reactive substance (UN 3242) and requires appropriate transport and storage controls for self-reactive materials. COA reports purity, moisture, decomposition temperature (DSC), and gas yield. SDS with self-reactive transport requirements is provided.
Applications
- PVC foam sheet and foam leather
- Rubber sponge and expanded gasket
- Thermoplastic foam sheet (PE, PP, EVA)
- Shoe sole expansion compound
- Breadmaking dough conditioner (some markets)
- Crosslinked foamed plastics
