What Is PVP?

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, povidone) is a synthetic water-soluble polymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone, available in a range of molecular weight grades described by their K-values (K-15 to K-90). The K-value reflects the viscosity of a dilute solution and correlates with molecular weight — higher K-value indicates higher molecular weight and greater film strength, while lower K-value provides better solubility and lower viscosity. PVP is amphiphilic — it has both polar (pyrrolidone group) and non-polar (backbone) character — which gives it excellent affinity for polar surfaces, good dispersant properties, and wide solubility in water and many organic solvents.

Hair Care and Cosmetic Applications

In hair styling products, PVP is a primary film-forming polymer — it deposits on hair fibres on drying to form a clear, glossy film that provides hold, body, and stiffness to the hair. Higher K-value grades (K-90) provide firmer hold for strong-hold hairsprays and styling gels; lower K-value grades (K-30) provide lighter, more flexible hold. PVP is also used in mascara and eyeliner as a film-former and binder, in nail care products, and in skincare formulations as a dispersant and film-former that improves the spreading and adhesion of colour cosmetic formulations.

Pharmaceutical Applications

In pharmaceutical tablet manufacturing, PVP (typically K-30) is one of the most widely used binders — added as a solution in wet granulation or as a dry powder binder to provide compressibility and tensile strength to tablet granules. It is also used as a solubiliser for poorly water-soluble drugs (amorphous solid dispersions), as a complexing agent, and in ophthalmic lubricating drops.
