What Is Potassium Sulphate (SOP)?
Potassium Sulphate (K₂SO₄), known as SOP or sulphate of potash, is a premium chloride-free potassium fertilizer containing 50–52% K₂O and 17–18% sulphur. Unlike Potassium Chloride (MOP), SOP contains no chloride, making it the preferred potassium source for chloride-sensitive crops such as tobacco, table grapes, citrus, and many horticultural species. The sulphate form of potassium is also directly available to plants without any soil conversion.
SOP in Specialty Crop Programs
SOP is widely used in premium fruit and vegetable production where chloride sensitivity is a concern or where additional sulphur is agronomically beneficial. In the Western Cape and other intensive horticultural regions of South Africa, SOP is a standard potassium input in table grape, citrus, and stone fruit programs. It is also used in fertigation where drip systems are managed to minimise chloride accumulation in the soil profile over successive seasons.
