What Is Isononanoic Acid?
Isononanoic Acid (INA, C₉H₁₈O₂) is a branched-chain C9 carboxylic acid produced from diisobutylene via the OXO process (hydroformylation followed by oxidation). Its highly branched structure provides excellent compatibility with hydrocarbon-based formulations, good low-temperature properties, and high hydrolytic stability compared to straight-chain fatty acids. It is closely related to 2-ethylhexanoic acid (C8) and neodecanoic acid (C10) in terms of chemistry and applications.
Metal Drier and Carboxylate Salt Production
Isononanoic acid is converted to metal isononanoates — including cobalt, manganese, zirconium, calcium, and zinc salts — for use as oxidative driers in alkyd paints, printing inks, and wood coatings. The C9 chain length provides high catalyst activity in the drier and good solubility in aliphatic and mineral spirit-based paint media, with low tendency toward crystallization at low temperatures.
Synthetic Lubricants and Esters
Esters of isononanoic acid with branched alcohols (such as isotridecanol) are used as synthetic lubricant base stocks and compressor oils with excellent viscosity-temperature characteristics and low-temperature fluidity. Isononanoate esters are also used as solvent carriers in cosmetics, personal care formulations, and as plasticizers in specialty polymer applications.
Vinyl Stabilizers and Specialty Coatings
Calcium and zinc isononanoate salts are incorporated into liquid heat stabilizer packages for PVC processing, offering good initial color hold and long-term thermal stability. In specialty coatings, isononanoic acid-based alkyd modifiers improve flexibility and adhesion of baked enamel and coil coating formulations.
Applications
- Metal drier production (cobalt, zirconium, manganese isononanoates)
- Alkyd paint and printing ink drier systems
- Synthetic ester lubricants and compressor oils
- PVC calcium-zinc heat stabilizer component
- Cosmetic ester and emollient production
- Specialty coating alkyd modifier
- High-performance corrosion inhibitor carboxylates
