What Is Manganese Sulphate?
Manganese Sulphate (MnSO₄·H₂O) is a water-soluble manganese salt containing 31–32% Mn. Manganese is an essential micronutrient required for photosynthesis, enzyme activation, and root growth. Deficiency is most common on alkaline, calcareous, or over-limed soils, and on waterlogged soils where manganese is converted to unavailable forms. The sulphate form provides fast-available Mn for foliar correction and soil application.
Manganese Deficiency and Application
Manganese deficiency is a widespread problem in South African cereal production, particularly on grey and sandy soils in winter rainfall areas. Symptoms include interveinal chlorosis on young leaves (grey speck in oats, pahala blight in sugarcane). Foliar application of 0.5–1.0% manganese sulphate solution provides rapid correction. Soil applications are less efficient on alkaline soils but can be effective when incorporated at planting. Manganese sulphate is also included in blended micronutrient programs for vegetables and fruit crops.
