What Is Butyldiglycol?

Butyldiglycol (BDG), also known as diethylene glycol monobutyl ether (DGBE), is a glycol ether solvent with a diethylene glycol backbone terminated by a butyl ether group. It is the next member of the butyl glycol ether homologous series after butyl glycol (ethylene glycol monobutyl ether), with an additional ethyleneoxy unit giving it a higher molecular weight, higher boiling point (~230°C), slower evaporation rate, and improved water solubility compared to butyl glycol. BDG is fully water-miscible and miscible with most organic solvents, making it a versatile coupling agent for systems that must dissolve both hydrophilic and hydrophobic components.

Cleaning Product Applications

In cleaning product formulation, BDG functions primarily as a coupler and grease solvent in concentrated all-purpose cleaners, degreasers, and hard surface cleaners. Its slower evaporation rate compared to butyl glycol provides a longer dwell time on soiled surfaces, improving grease dissolution before rinsing. BDG is particularly effective in high-dilution cleaning concentrates where a small quantity of active ingredients must produce a clear, stable solution over a wide dilution range. It is also used in oven cleaners and heavy-duty kitchen degreasers where extended surface contact time is important.

Paint and Coating Uses and Supply

In coatings, BDG is a coalescing agent and retarder solvent in water-based paints and varnishes, improving film formation at low temperatures and reducing brush marks in alkyd and acrylic systems. Terracore Chemicals supplies technical-grade BDG in drums and IBCs for cleaning product and coatings manufacturers across South Africa.
