What is Gelatin?

Gelatin is a translucent protein derived from the partial hydrolysis of collagen found in animal hides, bones, and connective tissue. Unlike fully hydrolysed collagen peptides, gelatin retains gelling properties in solution, making it a versatile functional ingredient for texture modification, binding, and encapsulation. Feed-grade gelatin is characterised by its bloom strength (gelling power) and viscosity, with grades selected based on application requirements.

Role in Animal Nutrition

In pet food manufacturing, gelatin improves texture, palatability, and moisture retention in wet and soft-moist formulations. It acts as a natural binder in extruded and baked products and is used in supplement encapsulation to improve palatability of bitter or medicinal ingredients. In aquaculture, gelatin can improve pellet water stability and texture, reducing feed wastage. Its high protein content and digestibility make it a beneficial protein source as well as a functional ingredient.
