What Is Monopotassium Phosphate?

Monopotassium Phosphate (MKP) is a fully water-soluble salt supplying 52% P₂O₅ and 34% K₂O with no nitrogen. It is chloride-free, making it suitable for chloride-sensitive crops such as tobacco, potatoes, and various horticultural species. MKP dissolves rapidly in water and is compatible with most water-soluble fertilizers, making it a versatile component in customised fertigation programs.

MKP in Fertigation and Blending

MKP is particularly valued in fertigation programs where growers need to apply phosphorus and potassium together without adding nitrogen. This makes it suitable for late-season application when nitrogen rates are being reduced but P and K demand remains high. In combination with potassium nitrate and magnesium sulphate, MKP forms the foundation of many speciality crop nutrition programs. Its low salt index relative to its nutrient content also makes it suitable for sensitive root zone environments.
