What Is Magnesium Sulphate?
Magnesium Sulphate (MgSO₄·7H₂O), commonly known as Epsom salt, is a fully water-soluble source of magnesium (16% MgO) and sulphur (13% S). It is one of the most widely used secondary nutrient products in both conventional and organic agriculture, valued for its fast-acting foliar correction of magnesium deficiency and its role in colour development and photosynthesis in leafy crops. The heptahydrate (7-water) form is the most commonly supplied for agricultural use.
Magnesium Sulphate in Crop Production
Magnesium deficiency is most visible as interveinal chlorosis on older leaves and is common on sandy or acidic soils, in high-rainfall areas, or where high potassium applications have suppressed magnesium uptake. Foliar sprays of magnesium sulphate at 1–2% solution provide the fastest correction. In fertigation, magnesium sulphate is a standard component of many nutrient programs for citrus, grapes, vegetables, and greenhouse crops. The sulphate sulphur also contributes to protein synthesis in sulphur-demanding crops.
