MCAA as a Versatile Alkylating Agent
Monochloroacetic acid is a highly reactive α-halo acid used extensively as a carboxymethylating agent. Its most important industrial outlet is in CMC (carboxymethylcellulose) production, where it reacts with alkali cellulose to install carboxymethyl groups, imparting water solubility and rheological control properties. MCAA is also central to the synthesis of glyphosate, the world’s most widely used herbicide, and to betaine amphoteric surfactants used in personal care products.
Handling and Regulatory Notes
MCAA is acutely toxic and corrosive, with systemic fluoroacetate-like toxicology at high doses. Terracore supplies in sealed 25 kg woven PP bags (flake) or 230 kg drums (molten, heated). Full regulatory documentation, including SDS with first-aid and decontamination protocols, is provided. Purchasers must confirm end-use application.
Applications
- Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) synthesis
- Glyphosate herbicide production
- Betaine surfactant manufacturing
- Thioglycolic acid synthesis
- Cyanoacetic acid and malonic acid production
- Pharmaceutical intermediate
