What is Vitamin K2 (Menaquinone)?

Vitamin K2, or menaquinone, is one of the two naturally occurring forms of Vitamin K (alongside K1, phylloquinone). Menaquinone exists in several subtypes (MK-4 through MK-13) based on the length of their side chain. Both MK-4 and MK-7 are used in animal nutrition, with MK-7 generally showing superior tissue bioavailability and longer half-life. Vitamin K2 is preferred over K1 in some formulations due to its broader biological activity and superior distribution to extrahepatic tissues including bone.

Role in Animal Nutrition

Vitamin K2 activates matrix Gla-protein and osteocalcin — key proteins involved in bone mineralisation and preventing calcium deposition in soft tissues. In laying hens, adequate K2 supports bone density, reducing cage layer fatigue syndrome. In companion animals, K2 supplementation is associated with improved bone health and reduced arterial calcification. Unlike K1, K2 has demonstrated activity in both coagulation factor synthesis and in directing calcium to bone rather than arterial walls.
