What Is Lithium Hydroxide?
Lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LiOH·H₂O) is a white granular solid produced by the causticisation of lithium carbonate with calcium hydroxide, or directly from lithium brine processing. It is a strong alkali, highly soluble in water, and forms lithium soaps with fatty acids. Battery-grade lithium hydroxide (≥56.5% LiOH, ultra-low impurities) has become critically important as the preferred lithium source for high-nickel cathode materials used in next-generation electric vehicle batteries.
Battery Grade — NMC & NCA Cathodes
Battery-grade LiOH is the preferred lithium source for high-nickel cathode materials such as NMC (lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide) and NCA (lithium nickel cobalt aluminium oxide) used in electric vehicle and energy storage batteries. Unlike lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide reacts more cleanly with high-nickel precursors at lower temperatures, improving cathode morphology, cycling stability, and energy density — critical for extending EV driving range.
Lithium Greases & Lubricants
Lithium hydroxide is the primary saponifying agent in the production of lithium grease, the world’s most widely used multipurpose grease. LiOH reacts with fatty acids (tallow, stearic acid, 12-hydroxystearic acid) to form lithium soaps that thicken mineral or synthetic base oils into stable, water-resistant, long-service greases used in bearings, chassis, and industrial machinery across automotive, mining, and manufacturing sectors.
CO₂ Scrubbing & Industrial Applications
Lithium hydroxide canisters are used to absorb carbon dioxide in confined atmospheres such as submarines and spacecraft, where the reaction 2LiOH + CO₂ → Li₂CO₃ + H₂O removes CO₂ per unit weight more efficiently than soda lime. Industrial applications include water treatment (pH adjustment), alkali fusion in analytical chemistry, and as a flux in specialty glass and ceramic formulations where lithium hydroxide can be preferred over lithium carbonate for its direct reactivity.
Applications
- NMC/NCA battery cathode precursor
- Lithium grease saponification
- CO₂ scrubbing (submarines, spacecraft)
- Water treatment pH adjustment
- Specialty glass and ceramic flux
- Alkali fusion analytical chemistry
- Heat transfer fluids
