What is Fumaric Acid?
Fumaric acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid that is an intermediate in the Krebs cycle. It is widely used in animal nutrition as a feed acidifier and preservative due to its strong acidification efficacy per unit weight, low pKa values, and solid-state physical properties that make it easy to handle and blend into compound feeds. Unlike liquid acids, fumaric acid requires no special handling equipment and has excellent flowability.
Role in Animal Nutrition
Fumaric acid has demonstrated consistent antimicrobial activity in the gastrointestinal tract of pigs and poultry, particularly against Gram-negative pathogens including Salmonella, E. coli, and Campylobacter. In piglet diets, fumaric acid supplementation improves feed intake and growth performance in the post-weaning period by reducing gastric pH. Research in ruminants shows fumaric acid supplementation reduces enteric methane emissions by shifting rumen fermentation away from methanogenesis. Its role as a mould inhibitor in compound feed also reduces mycotoxin risk.
