What is Gum Arabic?
Gum Arabic (acacia gum) is a natural exudate collected from Acacia senegal and Acacia seyal trees, primarily sourced from the Sahel region of Africa. It is a complex polysaccharide with a highly branched structure that renders it highly soluble in water, virtually tasteless, and highly fermentable by intestinal microbiota. It is one of the best-characterised prebiotic fibres, with a long history of safe use in human food and animal feed applications.
Role in Animal Nutrition
Gum Arabic has demonstrated clear prebiotic activity, selectively stimulating the growth of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species in the colon. Its high fermentability results in significant SCFA production, particularly butyrate, supporting colonocyte health and gut barrier integrity. In companion animal nutrition, gum arabic supplementation improves faecal quality and microbiome diversity. It also functions as a highly effective emulsifier and spray-drying carrier for flavours and bioactive compounds in functional feed applications.
