What is Microcrystalline Cellulose?
Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) is a refined, partially depolymerised cellulose derived from high-purity wood or cotton pulp through partial acid hydrolysis followed by purification. The result is a free-flowing, compressible white powder with excellent binding, anti-caking, and water-absorbing properties. As a purified insoluble fibre, MCC is physiologically inert and provides dietary bulk without contributing digestible energy.
Role in Animal Nutrition
In animal nutrition, MCC serves dual roles as a functional ingredient and a processing aid. As an insoluble fibre, it supports gut motility, reduces caloric density in weight-management pet foods, and supports faecal bulk and consistency. As a functional excipient, it is widely used in feed supplement compaction, tablet manufacturing, and as a free-flowing carrier for vitamin and mineral premixes. Its physiological inertness and purity make it ideal for pharmaceutical-grade animal supplement applications.
