Citric Acid Feed Grade Supplier South Africa

What is Citric Acid?

Citric acid is a naturally occurring weak organic tricarboxylic acid found in citrus fruits and produced commercially by fermentation of sugars using Aspergillus niger. Feed-grade citric acid is available in anhydrous (white powder) and monohydrate forms, both with purity of at least 99.5%. It is one of the most widely used organic acids in animal nutrition, valued for its acidification efficacy, flavouring properties, and antioxidant synergism.

Role in Animal Nutrition

Citric acid acidifies the gut environment, supporting pepsin activation and pathogen suppression in the stomach of young animals. It has documented efficacy in improving phosphorus bioavailability by chelating calcium and reducing phytate interactions, reducing phosphorus excretion in poultry and swine. As an antioxidant synergist, citric acid chelates pro-oxidant metal ions, extending the shelf life of fat-containing feed ingredients. In pet food, citric acid improves palatability and flavour acceptability.
