What Is Stearic Acid?
Stearic acid is a saturated long-chain fatty acid (C18:0) derived from animal tallow or vegetable oils (palm oil is the dominant plant source). It is a white waxy solid at room temperature with a characteristic fatty odour. Commercial stearic acid is available in three grades reflecting C18 purity: single pressed (~45% C18, balance palmitic/oleic), double pressed (~65% C18), and triple pressed (~90%+ C18 for highest melting point and hardness). The grade selection depends on the performance requirements of the final product.
Soap Hardening and Cosmetic Emulsification
In soap manufacturing, stearic acid is saponified with NaOH or KOH to form sodium stearate or potassium stearate, providing hardness, opacity, and a creamy lather to soap bars. Triple-pressed grades are used in high-quality cosmetic bars. In cosmetics, stearic acid is used as an emulsifier and consistency agent in lotions, creams, and shaving products. It also serves as a co-emulsifier with triethanolamine to form TEA stearate, a mild anionic emulsifier used in cream and lotion formulations.
Industrial Uses and Supply
Beyond cleaning and personal care, stearic acid is a primary lubricant additive, mould release agent, and dispersing agent in rubber vulcanisation, PVC stabilisation, and plastics processing. Terracore Chemicals stocks multiple pressed grades in 25 kg bags and bulk quantities for soap manufacturers, cosmetic formulators, and industrial users across South Africa.
