What Is Methyl Cellulose?

Methyl cellulose (MC) is a cellulose ether in which hydroxyl groups on the cellulose backbone are partially methylated with methyl chloride. Its most distinctive property is inverse thermal gelation: it is fully soluble in cold water but gels reversibly when heated above approximately 50–55°C. This sol-gel transition is fully reversible — the gel reliquefies on cooling — and can be tuned by concentration and grade selection.

Unique Thermal Properties and Applications

The thermally-reversible gelation of methyl cellulose is exploited in food processing (fat replacer in low-calorie products that gels on contact with cooking heat to prevent fat absorption), in pharmaceutical tablet coatings (controlling dissolution rate), and in specialty cleaners where a temporary gel can be formed, applied to a surface, and then rinsed away cold. In construction, MC improves tile adhesive slip resistance and mortar water retention at ambient temperature without interfering with set.

Supply and Grade Selection

Methyl cellulose is available in a range of viscosity grades, from 15 mPa·s (low-viscosity, fast-dissolving) to 15,000 mPa·s (high-gel-strength). Pharmaceutical grades (USP/BP) are used in tablet formulations and as a bulk-forming laxative; food grades (E461) are used in bakery products. Terracore Chemicals supplies technical and food-grade methyl cellulose in 25 kg bags for formulators in cleaning chemicals, construction, and specialty chemical applications.

Applications

  • Tile adhesive and cement mortar anti-slip additive
  • Thermal gel formation for specialty cleaner applications
  • Pharmaceutical tablet binder and film coating
  • Food-grade fat replacer in low-calorie products
  • Paper and board surface sizing agent
  • Specialty paint thickener with thermally-controlled flow
