What Is Formic Acid?
Formic Acid (HCOOH) is the simplest carboxylic acid and occurs naturally in ant venom. Industrially, it is produced via methanol carbonylation and is a colorless, corrosive, fuming liquid with a pungent odor. At standard concentrations of 85–90%, it is widely used across leather, textile, and rubber industries as a process chemical.
Formic Acid in Leather Tanning
Formic Acid is the preferred acid for chrome tanning baths, pickling hides, and adjusting the pH of tanning liquors. It penetrates hides rapidly and produces a uniform, stable pickle, making it the acid of choice for wet-blue and crust leather production.
Textile and Fiber Processing
In textile dyeing and finishing, Formic Acid is used to set dyes on nylon and wool, adjust dye bath pH, and as a stripping agent for synthetic fibers. It provides accurate pH control without introducing interfering ions.
Rubber Coagulation and Preservation
In natural rubber production, Formic Acid is a standard coagulating agent for latex. It is also used as a preservative in silage (animal feed), where its antimicrobial properties inhibit spoilage during storage.
Applications
- Leather tanning and hide pickling
- Chrome tanning bath pH adjustment
- Textile dyeing (nylon, wool)
- Natural rubber latex coagulation
- Animal feed silage preservation
- Electroplating bath acidification
- Descaling and cleaning agents
- Chemical synthesis intermediate
