What Is Nitric Acid?
Nitric Acid (HNO₃) is a highly corrosive strong mineral acid and powerful oxidizer. Industrial grades range from dilute (55–68%) to concentrated fuming grades (98%). It is produced industrially via the Ostwald process and is one of the most widely manufactured chemicals globally, serving as a key feedstock in fertilizer, explosives, and specialty chemical production.
Metal Etching and Surface Treatment
Nitric Acid is extensively used in metal processing — for etching copper, brass, and nickel in printed circuit board manufacturing; for passivating stainless steel and titanium; and in mixed acid pickling baths with hydrofluoric acid for stainless steel cleaning. It is also used in the production of silver nitrate and other metal nitrate salts.
Fertilizer and Explosive Precursor
The largest global use of nitric acid is in ammonium nitrate production for fertilizers and industrial explosives. It is also used in the manufacture of nitrate esters such as nitroglycerin and nitrocellulose, and as a raw material for other nitrate and nitro compounds used in pharmaceuticals, dyes, and specialty chemicals.
Chemical Processing
Nitric Acid serves as a nitrating agent in organic chemistry, introducing nitro groups into aromatic and aliphatic compounds for pharmaceutical, agricultural, and dye production. It is also used in analytical chemistry for digestion of metals and minerals, and in the production of nitrate salts across the specialty chemicals sector.
