What Is Tin Oxide (Stannic Oxide)?

Tin(IV) oxide (SnO₂), also known as stannic oxide or cassiterite in its mineral form, is a white powder with a rutile crystal structure. In its pure form it is an n-type semiconductor with a wide bandgap (~3.6 eV). This combination of transparency in the visible spectrum and electrical conductivity when appropriately doped makes SnO₂ one of the most technologically important transparent conducting oxides (TCOs), with applications ranging from optoelectronics to gas sensing.

Polishing & Jewellery Applications

Tin oxide powder is a traditional and effective polishing abrasive for metal, glass, ceramics, and stone surfaces. It produces a fine, bright finish without scratching and is used by jewellers for polishing gold, silver, and platinum jewellery. In optics, SnO₂ is used to polish optical glass, lenses, and gemstones including diamonds and sapphires. Its mild abrasiveness and chemical inertness make it suitable for delicate polishing operations.

Transparent Conductive Coatings (TCO)

Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) and indium-free SnO₂ coatings are used as transparent conducting electrodes on glass substrates for solar cells, flat panel displays, electrochromic smart windows, and defrost heaters. SnO₂ coatings are deposited by chemical vapour deposition (CVD), spray pyrolysis, or sputtering. Their excellent chemical stability and adhesion to glass give FTO coatings advantages over indium tin oxide (ITO) in applications requiring durability and lower cost.

Gas Sensors & Ceramics

Tin oxide is the principal sensing material in semiconductor gas sensors for detecting combustible gases (LPG, methane, hydrogen), toxic gases (CO, NOₓ), and volatile organic compounds. Its surface resistance changes dramatically in the presence of target gases, enabling sensitive, low-cost detection. In ceramics, SnO₂ is used as a glass opacifier, a colour-stabilising ceramic pigment modifier, and an electrode material in glass melting furnaces.
