What is Potassium Sorbate?

Potassium sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid and the preferred form for applications requiring water solubility. It is the most widely used food and feed preservative globally, approved for use across nearly all regions. In solution, it releases sorbic acid which is the biologically active antimicrobial agent. Feed-grade potassium sorbate is a free-flowing white crystalline powder with excellent solubility and stability in dry products.

Role in Animal Nutrition

Potassium sorbate provides effective inhibition of moulds and yeasts at low concentrations (pH-dependent activity up to pH 6.5) in moist and semi-moist pet food, wet treats, and liquid feed products where water activity is too high for simple drying preservation. It is particularly important in soft-moist pet foods and moist dog treats where without preservation, fungal spoilage occurs within days of manufacture. In silage and fermented feeds, potassium sorbate controls post-fermentation aerobic deterioration.
