What Is Dipropylene Glycol Methyl Ether?
Dipropylene glycol methyl ether (DPGME) is the methyl ether of dipropylene glycol, consisting primarily of the 1-methoxy-2-propanol dimer (with a minor 2-methoxy-1-propanol isomer). It is a member of the propylene glycol ether family, which is generally preferred over ethylene glycol ethers in applications where lower toxicity and better environmental profiles are required. DPGME is fully water-miscible, has a moderate evaporation rate, and is an effective solvent for resins, waxes, oils, and many polymer systems.
Cleaning and Coatings Applications
In cleaning product formulation, DPGME serves as a co-solvent and coupler in alkaline degreasers, all-purpose cleaners, and water-based industrial cleaning concentrates. Its ability to compatibilise oil-soluble active ingredients with water allows formulators to create stable, clear concentrate solutions that dilute to effective cleaning products. In water-based coatings (latex paints, water-borne wood finishes, industrial primers), DPGME is a coalescing solvent that temporarily plasticises the latex particles during film formation, improving film continuity and reducing the minimum film-forming temperature (MFFT).
Safety Profile and Supply
DPGME offers a better occupational safety profile than its ethylene glycol ether analogues (such as propylene glycol methyl ether, PGME), as propylene glycol ethers are generally considered less toxic and less reproductive-hazardous than ethylene glycol ethers. This makes DPGME preferred in reformulating cleaning and coating products toward lower-hazard solvent blends. Terracore Chemicals supplies technical-grade DPGME in drums and IBCs for cleaning product formulators and coatings manufacturers.
