Magneto Electric Detonator (Anti Stray Current) Supplier South Africa
An anti-stray-current electric detonator for blast initiation in environments with high stray current risk — the magneto electric detonator requires a high AC-frequency firing signal from a magneto blasting machine, providing immunity to DC stray current sources.

What Is a Magneto Electric Detonator?
A magneto electric detonator (anti-stray-current detonator) is a specialised electric detonator designed for use in environments where DC stray currents from mining equipment, cathodic protection systems, or earthed electrical infrastructure create an unacceptable risk of accidental initiation of conventional DC-fired electric detonators. The magneto detonator uses a high-frequency AC initiation mechanism — it fires only when supplied with an AC current at the specific frequency generated by a magneto blasting machine. DC stray currents (even substantial ones from traction power systems) will not fire the detonator because the firing mechanism is frequency-selective. This provides a fundamental safety advantage in underground mines with DC-electrified rail haulage, where stray current leakage from traction systems is a documented hazard for standard electric detonators.
Stray Current Hazard and Magneto Safety
Stray current is DC current that leaks from electrified rail or power systems into the surrounding ground and metallic structures. In underground mines with electric locomotive haulage on DC-powered rail systems, substantial stray current may flow through the ground between rail sections and return via earthed metal infrastructure. Standard electric detonators use a low-resistance bridgewire that can be ignited by stray DC currents of as little as 30–50 mA — well within the stray current levels documented near DC traction return circuits. Magneto detonators eliminate this risk: the detonator is inert to DC currents of any practical magnitude and fires only from the magneto blasting machine’s AC output. Blasting proceeds only when the magneto generates its specific firing signal, not from any stray or inadvertent current.
Application in Underground Mining
Magneto electric detonators are specified for blasting in underground mines and tunnels where DC electrified haulage systems are present, where cathodic protection of pipelines or structures introduces stray DC current, and in any environment where a formal stray current assessment has identified DC stray current as a hazard. Terracore Chemicals supplies magneto electric detonators to licensed underground mining operations. Supply requires valid explosives licensing and relevant end-user documentation. Technical support on stray current hazard assessment and detonator selection is available on request.
