What Is Coconut Oil?
Coconut oil is a tropical vegetable fat extracted from the dried kernel (copra) or fresh coconut meat of Cocos nucifera. It is characterised by a high saturated fatty acid content, dominated by lauric acid (C12, ~45–52%) along with myristic acid (C14, ~16–21%), caprylic/capric acid (C8/C10, ~13–15%), and palmitic acid (C16, ~8–11%). The high lauric acid content makes coconut oil an important feedstock for the surfactant industry (lauryl alcohol, lauryl sulfate, and APG surfactants are derived from coconut fatty acids) and contributes to its antimicrobial properties. Coconut oil melts at approximately 24°C and solidifies below this temperature, appearing as a white solid at ambient African winter temperatures.
Cosmetic and Hair Care Uses
In cosmetics, refined coconut oil (RBD — refined, bleached, deodorised) is used as an emollient in body lotions, creams, and hair conditioners. Its relatively small molecular size (compared to most plant oils) and lauric acid content contribute to its reported penetration into hair shafts — making it a popular pre-wash and leave-in hair conditioning treatment for reducing protein loss from hair during washing. In skincare, it is used as a moisturiser, skin-softening agent, and cleansing oil component. Extra-virgin coconut oil retains the natural aroma and some of the antioxidant phytochemicals of fresh coconut, making it preferred in premium and natural cosmetics.
Food and Industrial Applications
As a food ingredient, coconut oil is used in baking, confectionery (chocolate compound coatings), cooking, and as a dairy substitute in vegan food products. Its high saturated fat content gives it good heat stability for cooking. In oleochemical manufacturing, coconut oil is a major raw material for fatty acid, fatty alcohol, and glycerol production. Terracore Chemicals supplies coconut oil in RBD and virgin grades across Southern Africa.
