What Is Expanded AN Explosive?

Expanded AN explosive (ammonium nitrate-based explosive) is a blasting-grade bulk explosive based on porous or expanded ammonium nitrate prills sensitised by fuel oil or other sensitising agents. It is the ammonium nitrate-fuel oil family of explosive — lighter, lower density, and lower cost than emulsion explosives, making it suitable as a primary blast charge in dry blast hole conditions where water resistance is not a requirement. The expanded or porous ammonium nitrate prill has higher surface area than standard dense ammonium nitrate, which allows better fuel oil absorption and more consistent sensitisation. Expanded AN is widely used in open-pit mining (in dry ground conditions), surface coal mining, quarrying, and civil construction rock excavation.

Application and Limitations

Expanded AN explosive is the most cost-effective bulk explosive for dry, competent rock conditions. In applications where blast holes are dry, the ground is not fractured, and hole diameters are 65 mm or larger, AN-based explosives provide adequate energy for bench blasting at significantly lower cost per unit weight than emulsion. The critical limitation is water sensitivity — ammonium nitrate is highly water soluble, and wet holes or fractured ground allowing water infiltration will cause the explosive to desensitise or wash out, resulting in misfires. In wet conditions, emulsion explosive (powdery or colloidal) must be substituted. Expanded AN explosive is initiated by standard commercial detonators and is generally considered cap-sensitive at larger diameters, though booster initiation improves reliability.

Supply and Regulatory Requirements

Expanded AN explosive is regulated as a blasting explosive under the Explosives Act (South Africa). Supply requires valid explosives licensing from the purchasing operation. Terracore Chemicals supplies expanded AN explosive to licensed mining, quarrying, and construction blasting operations. Enquiries should include explosives licence reference, site location and delivery address, and estimated volumes required. As with all explosives in our range, supply does not proceed on a self-service basis — licence verification and technical review precede delivery.

Applications

  • Dry blast hole primary charge in open-pit hard rock mining
  • Quarry bench blasting in dry ground conditions
  • Surface coal mine overburden removal in dry seam conditions
  • Civil construction rock excavation (dry hole conditions)
  • Cost-effective alternative to emulsion in appropriate ground conditions
  • Decked charge designs in mixed dry/wet blast hole conditions
  • Aggregate quarry bench blasting (dry conditions, standard blast design)
