What Is Sodium Hypophosphite Monohydrate?
Sodium hypophosphite monohydrate (NaH₂PO₂·H₂O) is a white crystalline solid containing phosphorus in the +1 oxidation state, making it a potent reducing agent. Its primary industrial application is as the reducing agent in electroless nickel-phosphorus (EN) plating baths, where it reduces nickel ions to metal without an external electrical current. The nickel-phosphorus alloy produced has outstanding hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion protection properties that make electroless nickel one of the most versatile industrial coatings.
Electroless Nickel Plating
In electroless nickel (EN) plating, sodium hypophosphite is oxidised to phosphite while simultaneously reducing nickel(II) ions to nickel metal, depositing a uniform nickel-phosphorus alloy on virtually any substrate — including plastics, composites, and complex geometries — without the need for electrical contacts or current distribution management. The phosphorus content of the deposit (typically 5–12%) is controlled by bath composition and determines the coating’s hardness, magnetic properties, and corrosion resistance. EN coatings are used in the oil & gas, automotive, aerospace, and electronics sectors.
Reducing Agent in Chemical Synthesis
As a mild, selective reducing agent, sodium hypophosphite reduces diazonium salts to arenes (Balz-Schiemann type reactions with P(I) as reductant) and reduces certain metal salts to their metallic state for catalytic or decorative purposes. It is used in the chemical synthesis of flame retardants, specialty phosphorus compounds, and certain pharmaceuticals. In the food industry, technical-grade sodium hypophosphite is used in some antioxidant formulations, and it is used in the production of hypophosphorous acid.
Flame Retardant Precursor & Industrial Applications
Sodium hypophosphite and related hypophosphite salts are precursors to organophosphorus flame retardants used in engineering polymers, particularly nylon and polyester-based engineering plastics. The hypophosphite chemistry provides phosphorus in a reactive, non-halogenated form that integrates into the polymer matrix. It is also used in electroplating of palladium, cobalt, and other metals via electroless routes, and in the production of phosphinic acid derivatives for agricultural and pharmaceutical applications.
